Two crafts, one workshop

Batik or tie-dye?

Batik

A wax-resist technique: wherever the wax goes, the dye can’t. Your pattern appears when the wax comes off.

  1. Design your pattern

Choose your motifs and plan where they go on the cloth.

  2. Apply the wax

Stamp or draw your pattern onto the cloth with hot wax.

  3. Dye the cloth

The dye colours everything the wax hasn’t covered.

  4. Reveal

Remove the wax to reveal your pattern, then hang your cloth to dry.

Tie-dye

Fold, twist and bind the cloth so the dye reaches some parts and not others. Every fold makes a different pattern.

  1. Fold or twist

Fold, pleat, crumple or twist the cloth into your chosen shape.

  2. Bind it

Tie it tightly so the dye can’t reach the bound parts.

  3. Apply the dye

Add one colour or several, and watch them blend.

  4. Unwrap and reveal

Rinse, untie and open it up to see your pattern.
